How to go viral with your job search

Australia is a unique place… we’ve got dudes fighting kangaroos, snakes hiding in toilets, and our former deputy Prime Minister celebrating the world cup quarter-final victory.

Nothing unique about the last one except that he and 80 others watched the wrong game, posted it on social, and the "uh-oh" realisation dawned only the next day.

Btw I’m still not over the semi-final heartbreak, so we’re not talking about this here.

What we will discuss is this marketing strategy that’s proven incredibly successful in landing people jobs, taking them viral on social, and getting them published by BBC and Insider.

When everyone goes north, you go north-west!

LinkedIn introduced the “Open to Work” frame in June 2020.

If you ask recruiters… you should use it. If you ask career coaches… no you won’t come across desperate. If you ask LinkedIn… it’ll double your chances of hearing from hirers.

Why it works is fairly straightforward: when more people know you're open to work, more people can help you.

Millions of job seekers use this LinkedIn feature, but the select few who’ve stood out, secured offers, and gone viral, didn’t just put up this frame - they were creative with how they announced their job search.

All these guys secured full time roles + sponsorship to work in the UK within days after pulling this off.

Arham and Haider even got their stories published by Insider and BBC.

Why it works?

Getting hired is not about being the perfect candidate, it’s about getting noticed.

This so called stunt is not different to switching on your ‘Open to Work‘ frame. They’re both underpinned by the same principle:

Announce your job search publicly.

These guys are legendary marketers though. They understand 2 key things about content:

  • LinkedIn loves personal stories about vulnerability

  • People love photos that evoke an emotion

Combine these two elements, and that’s your secret to getting noticed on LinkedIn.

Next time you wanna announce your job search, don’t just turn on that green frame. Do something that’s little more stylish and little more creative.

My simplest announcement idea

I get it… there’s no way anyone’s convincing me to jump off a plane either.

Now, for those who prefer a simple way to announce their job search on LinkedIn and still stand out, I've got an idea for you.

Create a black screensaver with white text - then snap a photo of yourself with the screensaver - include a few words about your job search, and post it on LinkedIn.

Add this as the text in your screensaver.

Hey everyone, I’m eagerly looking for a “title“ role in “city“, and would appreciate any help you can send my way.

If you know anyone who’s hiring, or have any connections or advice for me, please let me know. It’d be a huge huge help.

I can’t wait to have a chat with you, share my resume, and tell you all about myself. Thank you so much 😊

That’s all for our 3rd edition, folks!

Let me know how you found it by responding to this email.
